Clarke: “Although the Lamentations do not bear any name of an author they have been ascribed to the prophet Jeremiah in the oldest tradition already. The Lamentations in the Septuagint (Greek translation of the OT, around 200 BC) begin with the following words: ‘And it happened after Israel had been led captive and Jerusalem had been destroyed that Jeremiah sat and lamented with the following lamentation and said: How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people!’”


Ironside: “Jerusalem's destruction by the Babylonians in the year 586 BC, which is described in the Lamentations by Jeremiah as eyewitness, is decisive for the date of writing. The time of writing therefore will have to be set shortly after this incident and in Jeremiah's last years of life.”


Chuck Smith: “There is on the site of Golgotha a cave that is called Jeremiah’s Grotto. This cave known as Jeremiah’s Grotto comprises a part of the face of the skull; hence the name Golgotha. Because as you look at the cliff, with these caves that are there in the cliff, they take the appearance of a skull. One of these caves is called Jeremiah’s Grotto. It is interesting that from those caves there on the site of Golgotha, you have a tremendous view of the city of Jerusalem, for Golgotha is actually the top of what was once Mount Moriah. And it looks down over the city of Jerusalem.  Tradition declares that Jeremiah sat in this grotto when he wrote the book of Lamentations, and there he wept and cried over the desolation of the city of Jerusalem as he saw its ruins, as he saw the walls destroyed, as he saw the buildings leveled. And from this vantage, he wrote this book.”


Guzik: “The Book of Lamentations is the collection of five poems or songs mourning the conquest of Jerusalem and the Kingdom of Judah….Lamentations is a remarkable written work because the first four of the five poems are written as acrostics. The twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet are used in succession to begin the lines and sections of those songs.”


Lamentations 1:1 ¶ How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people! how is she become as a widow! she that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary!

Lamentations 1:2 She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies.

Lamentations 1:3 Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits.


As you continue to read the chapter, Jerusalem is specifically identified as the city in mourning.  Jeremiah compares the once bustling city to a widow—solitary, helpless and alone.  The third and last group of people had been taken into captivity.  Though not identified in the book, history identifies Babylon as the place to which they were taken captive.  Jerusalem had once been recognized as a very blessed place, a princess in their region of the earth, especially during the reign of Solomon.

The city is compared to a woman that is weeping because she has been deserted by her lovers.   She doesn’t have a friend left in the world.  Those who had called themselves her friend had betrayed her and become her enemies.  


The people of Judah had been taken into captivity because they had abased and defiled themselves (from the Hebrew root for “afflicted”).   They now lived among the very people that had betrayed them, the Gentiles.  When they were captured, they had nowhere to run for safety; everyone had turned against them. 


Ironside: “Failing to maintain the place of separation to which God had called her, mingling promiscuously among her heathen neighbours, she soon proved, as all do who follow her steps, that ‘evil communications corrupt good manners.’ Walking with idolaters, she learned their ways; and as a result God gave her up to wander among the nations until she sickened of their practices.”


Lamentations 1:4 The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.

Lamentations 1:5 Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper; for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy.

Lamentations 1:6 And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed: her princes are become like harts that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.


The ways or paths to Zion are said to be mourning because they are empty; no one is traveling them to get to the solemn feasts at the temple.  The gates of the city had been destroyed, along with the rest of the city.  The few priests and unmarried girls that remained all grieved in bitterness.


The enemies of Jerusalem were secure and safe, while the people of Jerusalem had been taken captive.  Why?  Because the LORD was judging them for their many, many sins.  Jerusalem has lost all her beauty and her princes and rulers had been rendered weak and useless.  This had been foretold by Moses.


Deuteronomy 28:15, 41 & 45 “But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee….Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them; for they shall go into captivity….Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee….”


To Jeremiah’s anguish, he had personally tried to warn the people over and over again of the consequences of continuing to rebel agains the LORD.  For example:


Jeremiah 25:4–9 “And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear. They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever: And go not after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands; and I will do you no hurt. Yet ye have not hearkened unto me, saith the LORD; that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt. Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Because ye have not heard my words, Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the LORD, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof….”


Lamentations 1:7 Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her: the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her sabbaths.

Lamentations 1:8 Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.


Jeremiah personifies Jerusalem, speaking of how, in the midst of her affliction, she remembered glorious days of old.  When the day came that her people were taken captive by the enemy, there was no one to help her; her enemies mocked her.  


The people of Jerusalem had sinned greatly and were being judged.  She was no longer a city of any reputation.  She was destroyed.  She was now despised by those that had once honored her.  Jeremiah pictures her stripped and humiliated before her enemies, turning her face away in shame.


Lamentations 1:9 Her filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. O LORD, behold my affliction: for the enemy hath magnified himself.

Lamentations 1:10 The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things: for she hath seen that the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation.

By describing her filthiness as in her skirts, Jeremiah is picturing her as a prostitute.  Turning away from the one true God to follow false gods is pictured as adultery in the scripture, so the comparison is appropriate.  She embraced her sin with no regard for the future consequences.  Even though the scripture foretold it and God sent the prophets to warn and urge them to turn from their sin, they chose not to believe—I think, in large part, because of God’s long-suffering.  The same is true today as we await the return of Jesus.


2 Peter 3:3-4 & 9 “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation….The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”


The fall of Jerusalem was hard; there was no one to comfort her.  She is pictured calling out to the LORD in anguish because of how the enemy boasted in triumph over her.  The enemy had broken her apart and defiled the temple; they had entered where God had forbidden them to go and plundered all its treasures.


Lamentations 1:11 All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to relieve the soul: see, O LORD, and consider; for I am become vile.


The prophet notes how those left in the city are poor and searching for food. They are selling what few treasures they have left just to get food to eat.  Some commentators think this is a reference to selling their children.  She is pictured calling out for the LORD to consider how despicable she has become—obviously hoping for His pity.


Lamentations 1:12 ¶ Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.


Jerusalem is pictured calling out to those that would pass by her to look and see if they had seen anything that compared to the sorrow she endured as a result of the LORD’s anger against her.


Guzik: “Jerusalem felt what many sufferers feel; that her sorrow was incomparable to others and incomprehensible to others. There is a sense in which this is true, but it is true for everyone who endures a deep season of suffering. Few if any can truly relate to the depths of their sorrow.”


Lamentations 1:13 From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day.

Lamentations 1:14 The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are wreathed, and come up upon my neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.

Lamentations 1:15 The Lord hath trodden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men: the Lord hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress.


Jeremiah is using poetic language to describe God’s judgment coming down upon Jerusalem and its people as a fire and as a trap, leaving them sick and weak.  He pictures their captivity as being under a yoke held firmly in place by the LORD; a yoke made strong by their many sins.  They have no strength and no hope of escape because it is the LORD that has delivered them into the hands of their captor.  The mighty men of Judah are pictured being trampled under God’s feet and the city of Jerusalem (from the Hebrew for “virgin”) as his winepress.


Lamentations 1:16 For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.

Lamentations 1:17 Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her: the LORD hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him: Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them.


I like the clear wording of the NIV for these verses: “This is why I weep and my eyes overflow with tears. No one is near to comfort me, no one to restore my spirit. My children are destitute because the enemy has prevailed.  Zion stretches out her hands, but there is no one to comfort her. The LORD has decreed for Jacob that his neighbors become his foes; Jerusalem has become an unclean thing among them.”


Lamentations 1:18 The LORD is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.

Lamentations 1:19 I called for my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to relieve their souls.


Still personified, Jerusalem admits that the LORD is righteous.  Her people had rebelled against His commandments and deserved His judgment—being taken captive to Babylon.  She admits that those she had loved in rejection of the LORD had deceived her.  As is true with all adulterous partners, they didn’t really love her; they used her.  It seems that many of her priests and city leaders died of starvation during the siege.


Chuck Smith: “The Lord is always righteous in judgment, and yet it seems that that is an area where we always want to fault God. And we always hear sort of insinuations that God is unrighteous in judgment. ‘How can a God of love condemn a man to hell?’ You know, and you’ve heard the rest of it. And the idea is that God is not really righteous when He judges. But that’s one thing you can be certain of, and that is the righteousness of God in judgment.”


Lamentations 1:20 Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death.

Lamentations 1:21 They have heard that I sigh: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done it: thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me.

Lamentations 1:22 Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.


The city calls out in distress to the LORD.  She is suffering both inside and out.  She is grieving over her sin as well as over the death of her people.  Again, the point is made that there is no comfort to be found.  Her enemies are rejoicing over the fact that God had judged His people.  She calls out for the LORD to judge them just as surely as He had judged her.  Yes, she had greatly sinned; but so had they.  


The chapter closes with Jerusalem declaring that she suffers most from sickness of heart.


Courson:  “Every time you’re tempted to sin, turn to Lamentations 1 and ask yourself if it’s worth it.  Say to yourself, ‘This will lead me into captivity, take away my beauty, lead me into weakness, make me a laughingstock in the world, cause me to wander and wonder, pollute me, cause the Holy Spirit to be grieved, and will affect the entire congregation.  Do I really want to do this?’”

Lamentations 2:1 ¶ How hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not his footstool in the day of his anger!


The prophet is clear in stating that the LORD is angry with His people.  Mt. Zion (Jerusalem) is no longer beautiful in His eyes, not even His temple.  “His footstool” is a reference to the ark in particular and would include the temple in general.


1 Chronicles 28:2 “Then David the king stood up upon his feet, and said, Hear me, my brethren, and my people: As for me, I had in mine heart to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and for the footstool of our God, and had made ready for the building….”

Psalm 99:1 & 5 “The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved….Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.”


Clarke: “The women in the eastern countries wear veils, and often very costly ones. Here, Zion is represented as being veiled by the hand of God's judgment. And what is the veil? A dark cloud, by which she is entirely obscured.”


Lamentations 2:2 The Lord hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not pitied: he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah; he hath brought them down to the ground: he hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof.


Though the Babylonians were responsible for taking the people of Israel captive and destroying the city of Jerusalem and its rulers, the writer clarifies that it is the LORD that has brought it about.


That takes us back to the amazing link between God’s sovereignty and man’s choice.  The LORD in His foreknowledge, His omniscience, has positioned people in history to accomplish His purposes without violating their God-given ability to choose.  That is something I can say but not truly comprehend.


Lamentations 2:3 He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about.

Lamentations 2:4 He hath bent his bow like an enemy: he stood with his right hand as an adversary, and slew all that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion: he poured out his fury like fire.


Jeremiah seems to be saying that the people didn’t realize that their strength came from the LORD.  In His anger, He had removed the right hand of His strength from supporting them.  His anger is pictured as a burning fire.  The LORD is pictured in the stance of an enemy with his bow pointed directly at His people and the nation.  In the anger of His judgment, even those that served at the temple were included in the destruction.


Lamentations 2:5 The Lord was as an enemy: he hath swallowed up Israel, he hath swallowed up all her palaces: he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

Lamentations 2:6 And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden: he hath destroyed his places of the assembly: the LORD hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest.

Lamentations 2:7 The Lord hath cast off his altar, he hath abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the LORD, as in the day of a solemn feast.


The LORD’s destruction of Israel made Him appear to be an enemy and was a source of great mourning and sorrow.  It is the LORD that destroyed His temple, in the process eliminating the possibility of observing all the feasts and sabbaths that were meant to honor Him.  It seems He held the king and the priest directly accountable for allowing the nation to get to such a point of spiritual depravity.  It was because of their rejection of Him and their idolatrous practices that the enemy were allowed to raise the voice of victory in the temple, similar to the sound of the rejoicing usually heard on a feast day.  In fact, the LORD scorned both king and priest.


God had established the office of king and priest as His representatives before the people; they were to be the spiritual leaders of the people.  Those holding these offices no longer respected Him; in fact, they were largely responsible for leading the people in their sin.  Pastors today should remember that they are supposed to be God’s representatives to the people.  So many in the “church” are following in the footsteps of the spiritual leaders of Judah (in context).  Many in the ministry today are seeking the favor of people rather than the favor of God.  This, in effect, affirms the people in their sin and rejection of God’s will as revealed in His word.  I am sure He looks down on them with scorn as well.  Coming judgment is certain.


Lamentations 2:8 The LORD hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion: he hath stretched out a line, he hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying: therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament; they languished together.

Lamentations 2:9 Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD.


These verses emphasize that the complete destruction of Jerusalem was according to the purpose and plan of the LORD.  It is He who sent her king and princes into captivity among the Gentiles.  They obviously had no respect for God’s law; it was as if it didn’t even exist.  It also signaled an end to the ministry of the prophets for a time.  I think Jeremiah and Ezekiel were the last of the prophets to declare God’s will to the nation, and their ministry basically ended with the final destruction of Jerusalem.  Daniel’s prophetic ministry was really more focused on the coming of the Messiah and God’s plan to establish His kingdom; it was not directed to the people of that time.  God would once again send a few prophets to encourage the people once they returned from exile.


Gill re “he hath stretched out a line” - “a line of destruction, to mark out how far the destruction should go, and bow much should be laid in ruins; all being as exactly done, according to the purpose and counsel of God, as if it was done by line and rule.”


Lamentations 2:10 ¶ The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

Lamentations 2:11 Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.

Lamentations 2:12 They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers’ bosom.


These verses picture the utter despair of the aged men and women of Israel.  Clothing oneself in sackcloth was a sign of mourning.  The young women are particularly sad; they have no prospects for the future.  The prophet admits that he has wept til he has no more tears for the destruction of his people and the desperate situation facing the few that are left—especially the children.  They are starving and dying.  The picture is one of misery from the oldest to the youngest.


Lamentations 2:13 What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee?

Lamentations 2:14 Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.


The prophet is at a loss to find comforting words for the people of Jerusalem in light of their great suffering.  He blames the false prophets for not warning them of their sin and its consequences, instead telling them what they wanted to hear.  These false prophets were much like the seeker-sensitive preachers are today; they avoid preaching against sin that might make their audience uncomfortable.  They facilitate people staying comfortable in their sin, seeing no need for repentance.


Again, this is a predominant feature in the “church” today.  Paul warned Timothy against those who would not accept the teaching of God’s word and would turn to those who affirmed them in their sin.


2 Timothy 4:3–4 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”


EBC Abridged: “It took the shock of the Babylonian exile to break the power and influence of the popular prophets and to discredit them finally.”


Lamentations 2:15 All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?

Lamentations 2:16 All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.

Lamentations 2:17 The LORD hath done that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not pitied: and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee, he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries.


Jerusalem has become a target of mocking and scorn by those that pass by her.  They mock the words of the psalmist.


Psalm 50:2 “Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.”


Psalm 48:2 “Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.”


All her enemies are rejoicing at the destruction of Jerusalem, a day that they have been looking forward to seeing.  The writer notes that the LORD had warned the people from the time of Moses that this is what would happen if they rejected Him.


Deuteronomy 28:15, 36–37, 63 “But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee….The LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone. And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee….And it shall come to pass, that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it.”


Lamentations 2:18 Their heart cried unto the Lord, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease.

Lamentations 2:19 Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street.


Jeremiah is urging the people of Jerusalem to turn back to the LORD and humble themselves before Him in tears, pleading continually with Him to intercede for them on behalf their children who are dying of hunger.


Lamentations 2:20 Behold, O LORD, and consider to whom thou hast done this. Shall the women eat their fruit, and children of a span long? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?

Lamentations 2:21 The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed, and not pitied.

Lamentations 2:22 Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the LORD’S anger none escaped nor remained: those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed.


The prophet is horrified as he observes what is happening in the city.  He calls out for the LORD to consider what is happening—like He doesn’t know.  Women are so hungry that they are eating their dead children.  This too was part of Moses’ message of warning.


Deuteronomy 28:54–57 “So that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children which he shall leave: So that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat: because he hath nothing left him in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates. The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter, And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness, wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.”


Priests and prophets are being killed in the temple.  The streets of the city are full of the dead, both young and old.  He acknowledges that God is the one destroying His people without compassion.  The writer describes the whole situation as one in which the LORD has invited all of Judah’s enemies to join Him for this macabre feast day, and not one person, even the children, was shown mercy.


Though God is executing judgment, I do not believe it is without compassion.  I believe it is with great sorrow that He had to judge His people.  It was the last resort of a loving Father that had given warning after warning through His prophets.  And the people of Judah had witnessed His judgment against the Northern Kingdom of Israel.  


I personally believe the children that were killed were covered by His grace.
