Eph. 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 

Eph. 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. 


Again, “therefore” instructs us to consider all that has been presented to this point.  Considering God’s love for us and all that is ours in Christ, we should follow Him by imitating the life of Christ.  God the Father identified Jesus as His beloved or dear Son.  


Luke 3:22 “And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.”


In Christ, we too are His beloved children and should strive to show that in our lives just as surely as did Jesus.  THE defining characteristic of our life should be love.  The LORD was very clear in defining love as a willingness to deny self and serve others sacrificially as Christ so vividly exampled during His earthly ministry.  The key to being successful is in having the right motive—a desire to offer these acts of love and sacrifice as a “sweetsmelling savor” or gift to God.  If we could but define all our words and actions in context of loving and serving God rather than people, we would be less likely to be influenced by perceived benefit to self or perceived worthiness of the one to whom our words and/or actions are directed.


Eph. 5:3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 

Eph. 5:4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 


If we are choosing to imitate Christ, it therefore follows that our lives should not exhibit worldly characteristics.  Every child of God should live as befitting one who has been consecrated and declared pure and holy in Christ.  Paul’s instruction is strong and clear—not once should the child of God take part in these types of actions.  

  • Fornication – This is a reference to adultery and/or idolatry, which covers both physical and spiritual infidelity.

  • All uncleanness – This is a reference to physical and/or spiritual impurity of any kind.

  • Covetousness – This is a reference to greed or desire that would lead one to use fraud or extortion to fulfill their desire.

  • Filthiness – This is a reference to actions that are shameful or obscene.

  • Foolish talking – This is a reference to talk that evidences poor judgment.

  • Jesting – Again, this is a reference to vulgarity expressed in jokes or wit usually at the expense of someone else.

The more I get into the word and come face to face with the express instruction regarding things that we have learned to accept as normal, I am convicted more and more.  I come from a family that is quick to poke fun at the expense of others—not with vulgarity, but clearly with insensitivity.  In fact, the more I have begun to measure my activities and choices against the heart of God as expressed in His word, the more amazed I am at His unconditional love, mercy and grace toward me.  Yes, I am growing and continuing to make changes; but to my shame, these are changes that should have been made oh so long ago.


The phrase “not convenient” means “not appropriate” for the child of God.  The actions and words of the child of God should reflect a heart of thankfulness evidenced by imitation of Jesus and obedience to His word.


Wiersbe:  “Two indications of a person’s character are what makes him laugh and what makes him weep.  The saint of God sees nothing humorous in obscene language or coarse joking.”


Eph. 5:5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 


In this verse Paul is basically stating that those whose lives are characterized by fornication (whoremonger), uncleanness (filthiness, foolish talking, jesting) or covetousness (fraudulency, extortion, greed) cannot claim inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God.  The truth is that anyone whose life is characterized by such sin is an idolater; he/she has placed self on the throne and rejected God and His Son.


“in the kingdom of Christ and of God” – It jumped out to me that this seemed to be a unique reference to the kingdom.  Much to my surprise after doing several types of searches, I found that this verse, Luke 1:33 and 2Peter 1:11 were the only specific references to the kingdom of Jesus Christ I could find.  There are other scriptures that make reference to the Son and His eternal Kingdom (i.e., Isaiah 9 and Daniel 2), but this verse seems unique in identifying the kingdom with Christ and God, Son and Father.  The most common reference to the kingdom in scripture is as the kingdom of God.  The closest counterpart to this verse I could find in scripture was in Revelation.


Revelation 22:1-5  “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.  In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.  And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:  And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.  And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.”


The truth again reflects the plural nature of God—something I’ll never be able to truly understand this side of heaven for sure.  I do know that there is only one kingdom—not two.


Courson:  “The Greek word translated ‘whoremonger’ is pornos, from which we get our word ‘pornography.’  Whore-mongering is embracing a prostituted life.  And that can happen on the ‘900’ telephone lines, on the Internet, in the things you read, and in the movies you see.”


Eph. 5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 

Eph. 5:7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 


Paul warns the believers in Ephesus not to fall for the deceit of men using empty words, words that are not true.  Again, the truth is driven home that we are responsible to recognize and discern truth (cf comments at 4:17-19).  The truth is that God’s wrath will be directed towards the children of disobedience because they have rejected Him as LORD as evidenced by their actions.  Those who have embraced Jesus as Savior should be known as children of obedience.  We should diligently make choices that identify us as obedient, as those who accept God as the supreme authority in our lives.  We are to be “in the world, but not of it,” as Steve Green sings in “Higher Ground.”


Eph. 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 

Eph. 5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 

Eph. 5:10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 


“sometimes” – I believe would have been better translated “in time past” or “once.”


Before accepting Christ as Savior we were all children of darkness, but we are now children of light.  


John 8:12  “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”


Our lives should testify to our position in Christ.  We have been sealed with the indwelling Holy Spirit.  Proof of His indwelling presence is the fruit that is produced in our life that is good, righteous and truthful—the things that others see in us that identify us as belonging to God’s family.  


Again, the implication is either/or.  We are either walking as children of the light or darkness.  Our actions define us.  The Spirit will only lead us to walk in light, in a manner that is well-pleasing (from Greek for “acceptable”) to the LORD.


Eph. 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them

Eph. 5:12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. 


Paul is clear in stating that the child of God is not to have fellowship or take part in “the unfruitful works of darkness,” works that are associated with the world—the lust of the eyes, the flesh, and the pride of life.  We are to boldly reprove or rebuke others concerning these works by exposing these deeds both by instruction and teaching and by how we live.


Verse 12 is a clear indicator of how much society has degenerated.  Paul is telling the Ephesians that it is shameful to even talk about what people are doing in private that is sinful.  Not only do we talk openly about what was previously recognized as “secret” sins, we embrace them as part of our entertainment and accommodate them through our government and judiciary system.


Eph. 5:13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. 


Light gives illumination.  Just as the life of Christ exposed the sin of the spiritual leaders of His day, the life of the child of God should expose the sin of those around us.  


Eph. 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. 


This appears to be another reference to the words of the prophet Isaiah.


Isaiah 60:1-2  “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.  For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.”


It’s a call for those that are spiritually dead to wake up to spiritual life in Christ.  It seems significant that Paul references the state of being spiritually dead as accompanying a state of sleep or being unaware.  Once one recognizes their sin, it’s like they are waking up to their need and the life that is available in Christ.


Eph. 5:15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 

Eph. 5:16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 


Because we are privileged to be part of God’s family in Christ, we should be exacting and diligent (from the Greek for circumspectly) in how we live.  In fact, the root word for circumspectly is in the superlative form—most exact and straightest.  Most of the translations use the word careful, but I don’t think that conveys the strength of Paul’s admonition.  To be diligent and exacting in staying on a straight path conveys putting forth strenuous effort not to deviate from obedience to the LORD in the slightest degree.  In fact, the word for strait in the Old Testament usually conveys a sense of being hemmed in and narrow.  Scripture declares that entrance to eternal life through the strait gate is from a narrow path not found by many.


Matthew 7:14 “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”


When we choose to exercise diligence in obeying God’s word, we identify ourselves as wise—not foolish.  When we make wise choices, we are redeeming the time, making the most of our opportunities.  I liked the Greek for redeem—“to rescue from loss.”


I think the last phrase of verse 16 is a reference to a general characterization of the days in which we live and in which all have lived since the time of Christ in that most of the world has rejected God’s authority.  


Eph. 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is


Paul continues to drive home his point—Don’t be unwise or foolish.  Choose to understand the will of the LORD.  He would not make this statement unless the means were available through which we can obtain understanding of God’s will.  The most obvious means is through familiarity with His Word.  The psalmist states it clearly.


Psalm 111:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever."


Psalm 119:104 “Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.”


Eph. 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 

Eph. 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 


I think Paul singled out drunkenness as a specific contrast to encouraging the Ephesians to be filled with the Spirit.  Drunkenness is characterized by being out of control and the domination of the flesh in one’s life.  Being filled with the Holy Spirit is characterized by being in control and having the love of God dominate your life.  The Greek for excess is a reference to being profligate or having an immoral lifestyle.  A life controlled by the Spirit will example a life of morals and purity.


When one is filled with the Spirit, he/she exhibits a joyful heart.  One of the expressions of a joyful heart often comes through singing or humming psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.  Although the Greek did not help me differentiate greatly between these three categories, it was clear that these would be songs that were spiritual or religious vs. carnal; it even emphasized ethereal or heavenly vs. demonic.  I thought of the psalms as scripture set to music, hymns as man’s worshipful thoughts set to music, and spiritual songs as the general category of all music that glorifies God and enhances the worship of the child of God.


Courson:  “When I feel things aren’t going very well, I’m tempted to lose heart.  When this happens, the only thing to do is to speak to myself in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.”  To which I give a hearty Amen!


Eph. 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 


The child of God should be ever in at attitude of thanksgiving for “all things” that are his/hers in Christ; I think that is the proper reference in the context of Paul’s letter and in connection with being filled with the Spirit.  The Holy Spirit will always lead the child of God to glorify and worship God and His Son Jesus.


John 15:26  “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me….” 


John 16:13-14 “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.  He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”


Eph. 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. 


When we act wisely and are filled with the Spirit, our lives will be characterized by a humility that submits to one another in the fear of God.  The scripture defines the fear of God as the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10).  It’s another way of describing a heart that is yielded to the authority of God.  I think it is an admonition to recognize and honor the God-established authorities in one’s life—beginning in the home.


Eph. 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 

Eph. 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 

Eph. 5:24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 


Christian wives are instructed to submit to their husbands “as unto the Lord.”  Not because he is necessarily wiser than you or even more spiritually mature than you, but just because you desire to obey God.  By submitting to your husband you are submitting to God.  When two people are married, they become one in the eyes of God.


Genesis 2:24 “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”


A body can only have one head, and God has designated that position to the husband.  Paul uses that comparison to picture the relationship between the church (the bride) and Christ as its head.  If she accepts Jesus as Savior and LORD, a Christian wife is to obey Him by submitting to her husband.


Eph. 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 


Christian husbands are to love their wives in the same way that Christ has shown His love for the church through giving His life in sacrifice to provide for her salvation.  My contention is that the husband has the far harder responsibility, and that no woman will have a problem yielding to a husband who loves her in accordance with that instruction.  The harder test is yielding to the authority of a husband who does not love you according to the love of Christ, but the will of God is clear that the Christian is to yield to authority as established by Him.  (See journal on 1Peter 2-3 for further teaching.)


Eph. 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 

Eph. 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 


In these verses we are told why Christ was willing to give Himself for the church—to make us clean and pure and present Himself with a glorious perfect bride.  God the Father and His Son Jesus do everything with a pure love for us and for each other.  Though we have been declared righteous in Christ, He continues to sanctify and cleanse us through the ministry of the Word.  The Word has long been recognized as a life-changing agent.  The Psalms, and especially Psalm 119, contain many references to its power in the life of men of faith.


Psalm 119:9, 11, 50, 105  “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word….Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee….This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me….Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”


And God Himself declares its power through the prophet Isaiah and the writer to the Hebrews.


Isaiah 55:11 “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”


Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”


Eph. 5:28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 


Christ is the head of the church, the body of Christ.


Colossians 1:13&18 “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son…. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”


Just as Christ in love sacrificed Himself and provided for His body, the church, the Christian husband is to love his body, his wife.  A person who loves himself will take care of his body.  A Christian man who wants to take care of his body will love his wife.  


Eph. 5:29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 

Eph. 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 


Paul could not conceive of a man who hated his own flesh and would fail to nourish and take care of it; it is just part of our nature.  Sad to say, that outside Christ and through the deceit and influence of the enemy, many learn to treat their bodies shamefully and neglectfully.


Under normal circumstances most men are concerned about providing for the needs of their body.  It is in the very nature of God’s Son to love and care for His body, the church, as part of His very being.  The fact that he uses the language of caring for flesh and bones vs. flesh and blood gives emphasis to the fact that Paul is speaking spiritual truth.  Scripture is clear that the life of the body of flesh is in the blood.  In Christ, we are looking forward to a body of flesh and bones whose life is in the Spirit.


1 Corinthians 15:50 “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.”


Eph. 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 


This is a powerful verse that is basically ignored in our society today—even among Christians.  A man is to leave his father and mother for the purpose of joining his life to a woman to become one flesh for life.  


Divorce has become the rule more than the exception.  Even among “Christians” the divorce rate is no different than that among those who aren’t.  It is God’s will that marriage be a “til death do you part” partnership.  


Matthew 19:5-6 “And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?  Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”


Every Christian divorce in particular is an act of destruction.  What was established as a life partnership meant to fulfill the needs of both man and woman is now regarded as a temporary arrangement to fulfill selfish needs until the grass looks greener elsewhere.  The vows to commit through richer or poorer and in sickness and in health are just words often uttered with no true commitment from the heart.


Eph. 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 


Contrary to how man has made a mockery of the commitment God intended for marriage, Christ is totally committed to His bride.  I think the mystery Paul is referencing is how Christ views His relationship to His church as pictured in God’s intended relationship for marriage between man and woman.  Though man may pervert the picture, he can’t change the truth that it was intended to represent as first established by God.


Eph. 5:33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband. 


Again emphasizing the practical application of the truth he is teaching, Paul summarizes the role of the Christian husband and wife.  The husband is to love his wife as part of his own being, and the wife is to reverence (show respect through submission to) her husband.

Eph. 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. 


This chapter continues right on regarding application of God’s established authority to each person in the family.  Paul now addresses the children.  (Reminder:  Paul is writing to Christians.  The assumption is that these are children being raised by Christian parents.)  They are to understand that obedience to their parents is “right,” in accordance with God’s will.  To obey or do as parents instruct you shows that you recognize their authority.  My daughter instructs her children with a phrase I like—Obey right away without delay.  And frankly, as God’s children, that is exactly the response we should have to the instructions in His word.


“for this is right” - There is so much talk today concerning what is right, what is moral.  Man may argue all he wants, but the only standard for what is right and moral is found in the word of God.  Man does not have the ability to establish such a standard.  Every standard of man is rooted in his own selfish perspective.


Eph. 6:2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) 

Eph. 6:3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.


Verse two is referencing the fact that this was the first of the Ten Commandments that promises a special blessing for obedience.   


Exodus 20:12 “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”


As given to the Israelites, it was directly connected to their continued possession of the Promised Land.  Through the Holy Spirit, Paul is declaring the promise to be directly connected to the Christian’s well being and length of life.


Even as we grow older, to show honor to your parents gives evidence to how you honor God.  When we honor our parents, we show appreciation for the guidance and direction they give us as a result of their own experience and learning that is well worth consideration.   We honor our parents when we show our gratitude for their love and care for us by loving and caring for them in their time of need.


The promise that accompanies this command seems cut and dried, but the reality in some people’s lives seems to deny its truth.  It’s another one of those areas in which we have to accept that our thinking and understanding comes far short of God’s.  What we determine as well or good can be very different from how God views events in our lives.  


This is another one of those areas in which faith in our Father in heaven is key to how we respond to the “bad” things that happen in our life, such as when someone we love dies “before their time.”  I was actually having a conversation with my grandchildren (ages 7, 5 & 4) yesterday regarding their concern about their mother who was out driving in a thunderstorm.  I reminded them that as God’s children, we didn’t have to worry about things like that because He is always working what is good in our lives—even when things look bad to us.  I asked them, “What is the worst thing that can happen to us?  We can die.”  The seven year old piped right up and said, “That’s not the worst thing, because we get to go to heaven with Jesus.”  Every child of God should have the heart of that seven year old.


Eph. 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. 


Again, the address is to the father as the chief authority in the family and is accountable before God as to the training and direction given the children.  The Greek for the word nurture made reference to instruction including disciplinary correction; the Greek for admonition made reference to the use of mild rebuke and warning.  Seeing these meanings gave context for not provoking children to wrath, which is in contrast to positive instruction and would include giving instruction without proper correction and warning.  Proper correction and warning can only be provided from an established foundation of understanding as to the expectations of the instructor.  Christian fathers should always establish that foundation according to God’s word.  Christian fathers should follow God the Father’s example of giving clear instructions and establishing acceptable behavioral boundaries with clear, appropriate consequences for disobedience and consistent, loving enforcement.


Eph. 6:5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; 

Eph. 6:6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; 

Eph. 6:7 With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: 

Eph. 6:8 Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. 


Paul now turns his attention to servants.  The Greek for this word makes reference to slaves, whether voluntary or involuntary.  Paul is reminding us that everything we do should be with a heart toward honoring and serving the Lord.  I think it is important to note that God’s word instructs us about living according to His will in this world.  In Paul’s letters to the Galatians and Colossians, the Spirit tells us that there is no respect of persons before God; we are all on equal footing before the LORD.  The fact that we claim His name and represent Him before others requires that we act through the supernatural empowerment of the Spirit and reject worldly attitudes.  The Christian servant is to serve with the understanding that he is serving God by serving His master.  His/her goal isn’t to please his master; it is to please God.  With that purpose in mind, there should be no difference in the quality and dependability of your service whether your master is present or not; it should also ensure that one’s service is the best that he can do.  When the motive for our actions is to serve God, we can be assured that those actions will be rewarded by God.


This principle is also applicable to employees toward their bosses, and the principle from the following verse is applicable to bosses toward their employees.


Eph. 6:9 And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him. 


Paul next turns his attention to Christian masters.  Just as Christian servants are to serve as unto the LORD, Christian masters are to rule their servants with a mindset of honoring God as His servant in the process.  Threatening a servant means you are ruling him through inspiring fear.  God rules His kingdom in love, grace and mercy.  This doesn’t mean that there are no consequences for disobedience or poor service.  It does mean, however, that expectations are clear and reasonable and that correction or punishment is administered with consistency and with the intent to change behavior—not browbeat.


I can’t help but note that these masters are not instructed to free their servants; although they are reminded that in God’s eyes these servants are on equal footing with their masters.  Every response they have to a servant should reflect God’s heart toward His servants.


Eph. 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 


After addressing the importance of submission to authority as established by God, Paul moves right on to a discussion of spiritual warfare.  I hadn’t really thought about it before, but this is a natural progression in the flow of thought.  Some of our worst spiritual struggles as Christians occur in the areas of humility and submission to authority.  


Paul often positions himself as just one of the brethren.  Though he is an apostle by the will of God and positioned as a leader in the early church, he recognizes that he is but another sinner saved by grace.  He struggled with sin and temptation just as others in the body of Christ do.  


Romans 7:15–23 “For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not….for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.”


At this point Paul becomes an encourager even though his message is one of spiritual warfare.  Never in scripture did God tell us that submission to Him and living the Christian life would be easy.  He did, however, promise to be with us and empower us to be overcomers.


Romans 8:18 “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”


1Thessalonians 3:4 “For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.”


1Peter 4:19 “Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.”


Matthew 28:20 “…lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”


1Corinthians 10:13 “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”


1John 5:4 “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”


When Paul tells the believers to “be strong in the Lord,” he knows that he is not asking the impossible.  The key truth for the child of God is that his/her power is from the LORD in the person of the Holy Spirit.  If we will but yield to His authority and will, there is no fear, temptation or enemy we can’t conquer.


Eph. 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 


Just as the battle in which we are engaged is spiritual, so is the armor needed to engage in the battle with courage and confidence.  Each piece of this armor is an attribute or gift of God that He is ready and willing to impart to each one of His children.  The fact that we are told to put on armor implies that we are facing an enemy.  Paul doesn’t leave us guessing as to the enemy; it is the devil—the false accuser, the slanderer (from the Greek).  The devil is no ordinary opponent.  He doesn’t usually choose to attack you head on; he’s too smart for that.  He uses “wiles,” which Webster defines as trickery, deception and allurement.  The Greek adds the idea that he is lying in wait looking for the opportune time to attack.  He’s looking for the time when your defenses are down.  By appropriating the armor of God we frustrate his attempt to identify when we are vulnerable.


The next verse goes on to describe the forces that are working in league with the devil.  He can only be at one place at a time, and I’m sure his focus is on those that have the greatest spiritual impact on others.  His forces are many and powerful.


Eph. 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places


Paul again emphasizes that the Christian’s struggle is a spiritual one; his enemies can’t be seen.  They are defined as not consisting of flesh and blood; they are identified as:

  • Principalities – The Greek implies that these are the leaders among the evil spiritual forces.

  • Powers – The Greek indicates that these are evil spiritual forces that have been delegated certain areas of power and authority.

  • Rulers of the darkness of this world – I got the idea that these evil beings are the spiritual influences behind evil people on planet earth.

  • Spiritual wickedness in high places – Maybe this has to do with the limited abilities Satan and his forces have to use the weather and other deceptive signs associated with the skies and heavens as they seek to turn men from God.


Whether or not I have the specifics right regarding the different ranks or positions, I am confident that the reference is to the demonic forces that are led by Satan and that are continually working to disrupt the will of God on planet earth and establish cause for accusation against the child of God.  Consider the following:

  • When God sent a messenger to Daniel as recorded in Daniel 10, he was hindered for 21 days until Michael, the archangel, came to help him so that he could continue on to Daniel. The force that hindered him was identified as the “prince of the kingdom of Persia.”

  • The book of Job begins with God allowing Satan to persecute Job to prove Job’s integrity and faith. In trying to get Job to curse God he utilizes wicked men, the forces of nature, and even disease.

  • John very clearly records that Satan is obsessed with “accusing the brethren.”


Revelation 12:10 “And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.”


Eph. 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

 

Paul is basically saying—“In consideration of the powerful evil forces that will attack you, put on the whole suit of armor provided by God to protect you from these attacks. If you do, you will not only survive the attack, you will emerge the victor of each battle.”


Eph. 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 

Eph. 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 

Eph. 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 

Eph. 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 


In these four verses Paul itemizes the armor provided by God to each believer.

  • The belt of truth

  • The breastplate of righteousness

  • Shoes of peace that identify you as prepared to share the gospel

  • The shield of faith

  • The helmet of salvation

  • The sword of the Spirit, the Word of God

It’s interesting to me that truth and righteousness are the first pieces of armor mentioned since Jesus described the enemy as the “Father of lies.”


John 8:44 “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” 


The Holy Spirit through Paul also identified the works of Satan as unrighteous.


2Thessalonians 2:9-10 “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”


If we determine to cling to the truth of God’s word and act in righteousness and obedience, Satan will not be able to seduce or deceive us.  


Wearing shoes of peace identify us as part of God’s army.  Scripture is clear in declaring that “there is no peace for the wicked” (Isaiah 48:22).  Those who wear shoes of peace are intent on sharing the gospel with others and promoting peace among men.  Satan and his forces, on the other hand, are ever out to undermine God’s word and cause trouble.  


Utilizing the shield of faith means that we are keeping our focus on the character of God and refusing to regard any declaration that presents Him or His truth in any light that does not align with His Word.  This was the critical piece of armor that would have delivered Eve from Satan’s deception in the garden.  Satan’s darts come in many different forms, but they are all tipped with the same few poisons—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life.  It’s interesting to note that Paul prefaced this piece of armor as the most important (“above all”) even though he listed it fourth (probably because he is using the picture of a soldier getting ready for battle).  Without faith we can’t access the other pieces of armor.


The helmet of salvation again identifies us as part of God’s army and signifies one is empowered by the Holy Spirit.  We can’t expect to defeat supernatural forces of evil without access to supernatural power of our own, and the child of God is empowered through the Holy Spirit from the moment he places his faith in Christ.   


The sword of the Spirit, God’s holy word, is the only piece of armor that is used for offense as well as defense.  The more familiar we are with God’s word and the more we hide it in our heart, the more that is in our arsenal for the Holy Spirit to supply as needed.  I also believe this includes personal inspiration of the Spirit as needed in situations such as referenced by the LORD’s teaching in Mark 13.


Mark 13:9&11 “But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them….But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.”


It is also interesting to note that the LORD expects us to face our enemy prepared and confident; we are not to be afraid.  Paul emphasized this truth in his letter to Timothy.


2Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.


As I was listening to the late Adrian Rogers this morning, he emphasized this section a bit differently.  It crossed my mind that he was basically saying, “Clothe yourself in Jesus.”  A little later he voiced that very thought.  Though not exactly how he presented it, this is how I processed it.

  • TruthJohn 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

  • Righteousness1 Corinthians 1:30 “But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption…”

  • Peace2 Thessalonians 3:16 “Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means.”

  • Faith - 1 Timothy 1:14 “And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.”

  • Salvation Luke 19:10 “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

  • Word of God John 1:1 & 14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”


Paul actually voiced this same thought in his letter to the Romans.


Romans 13:14 “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.”


Eph. 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; 

Eph. 6:19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, 


You can’t read the writings of Paul without identifying him as a man who has great faith in the power of prayer.  He is encouraging the Ephesian believers to pray in the power of the Spirit.  I think it is interesting to note that the Greek for “praying” and “prayer” includes the idea of worship.  It seems to me that Paul is emphasizing just that point—Prayer is a time of worship as well as supplication.  I know I grew up thinking that prayer was a time of talking to God and asking Him to do things for me and for those for whom I prayed.  Prayer is much more than a time of making requests to God; it’s a time of fellowship with the Father, a time to express your love and praise for Him.  When we pray in the Spirit, He leads us to just such expression.  Jesus taught this truth to His disciples.


John 16:13-15 “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.  He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.  All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”


Paul goes on to emphasize that it is important for us to be watchful and alert to the needs of the saints (other believers) and to pray for them accordingly with perseverance and diligence.  James too emphasized the power of prayer in the life of a believer.


James 5:16 “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”


Neither does Paul hesitate to ask for prayer for himself.  He was human, and he didn’t want to be impeded in his mission to spread the gospel by human fears. He requested prayer for inspiration and boldness as he continued to present the “mystery of the gospel,” that it was for Gentile and Jew alike.


Eph. 6:20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.


From this verse we know that Paul was writing this letter from prison and that he was in prison because of his ministry.  Paul wants to be bold in his testimony while in prison, and he wants to present his message in the right way with the right words.  He wants his message to result in changed lives; he wants to present his message in love.


Eph. 6:21 But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things: 

Eph. 6:22 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts. 


As he closes, Paul knows that his friends will want to know more about how he is doing; and he assures them that Tychicus, the one bringing them the letter, will give them a thorough update.  Tychicus is identified as a “beloved brother” and “faithful minister in the Lord.”  Paul considered him a dear friend and a dependable and faithful servant who was serving the LORD and through his service to the LORD was serving Paul and others.  In other words, he lived by the principle that Paul had been writing about.  Paul was sending Tychicus as a faithful messenger of the truth who would deliver that message as one of encouragement.


Eph. 6:23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 

Eph. 6:24 Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.


Paul closes this letter just as he begins it—wishing the believers in Ephesus grace and peace.  Peace is only available to those who love God in faith.  I really liked the translation from the CJB for verse 23:  “Shalom to the brothers. May God the Father and the Lord Yeshua the Messiah give you love and trust.”  It emphasizes the unity of Father and Son and that they are the source that empowers us to grow in love and strengthen our faith.  


The wording of verse 24 was also intriguing.  Paul wished grace for those who love the LORD Jesus “in sincerity.”  Most of the translations make reference to undying or incorruptible love.  When I looked at the Greek, it also made reference to genuineness.  Obviously, genuine love is undying and incorruptible; but it also implied that there could be those in the church whose professed love of Jesus was not genuine.  Sad to say, I think that is a true statement about the “church”—not just of Paul’s day, but of today as well.
